What are the Nuts?

Your final hand consists of five cards. You can choose the best combination from your

two pocket cards and the five community cards.

To determine the strength of your hand you have to know which is the best possible hand

(the nuts) and how many possible hands can beat your hand.

To identify the nuts you start with best hand (royal flush) and go the list downward,

eliminating the impossible hands.

  1. Are there three cards of the same suit higher or equal a ten = possible Royal Flush?
e.g. Ace of hearts Queen of hearts Ten of hearts

here King of hearts Jack of hearts gives someone a Royal Flush.

If no ==> go to step 2

  2. Are there three cards of the same suit within five ranks of another = possible Straight Flush?
e.g. Ten of spades  8 of spades 7 of spades

here Jack of spades 9 of spades or 9 of spades 6 of spades gives someone a Straight Flush.

If no ==> go to step 3

  3. Is there a pair on the board = possible Four of a kind (4oak) or Full House?

e.g. Ten of spades  8 of spades  Ace of hearts Ten of hearts 7 of spades

here Ten of diamonds Ten of clubs is a 4oak

and  Ace of diamonds Ace of spades or 8 of hearts 8 of clubs or 7 of diamonds 7 of spades are possible Full Houses

If no ==> go to step 4

  4. Are there three cards if the same suit without a pair on the board = possible Flush?

    e.g.
Jack of spades  6 of spades Ace of spades Ten of hearts  8 of clubs

here King of spades 9 of spades is the nut Flush

Queen of spades 8 of spades would be the second nut Flush and so on

If no ==> go to step 5

  5. Are there three cards within five ranks of another  (and none of above) = possible Straight?

If the highest card on an unpared board is a jack or lower, a straight will always be possible !

e.g. Queen of spades Jack of hearts 8 of clubs 6 of spades 2 of diamonds

here any combination of a ten and a nine will be the nut straight:

9 of spades Ten of hearts  or Ten of diamonds 9 of hearts

If no ==> go to step 6

  6. The board is not paired and there is no flush or straight possible. Now a set of the highest board card is the nut hand.

e.g  Queen of spades Jack of hearts 7 of diamonds 5 of hearts 2 of diamonds

Here a set of queens is the nuts.

Sometimes a card you hold is ruling out the possibility of a better hand.

Example:

You have a flush with   Ace of spades 9 of spades

and a board of   Queen of spades Jack of spades 8 of spades 5 of hearts 2 of diamonds

The board would allow a Straight Flush with   Ten of spades 9 of spades

But as you are holding the 9 of spades noone can have a Straight Flush.

Therefore you are holding the nuts.

Summary

You should always be able to identify the nut hand.
This will help you making the right decisions in difficult situations.
